Communities and Areas

Supporting communities to ensure that the Welsh language thrives in Gwynedd is a priority for us. We will make this happen in many ways, but the most important thing is that we support local people to ensure that the use of the Welsh language increases. We can only increase the use of the Welsh language by ensuring that local people are proud of their Welshness and know how to share that pride in positive ways.

In order to plan our work, we have split Gwynedd into 13 specific areas. The areas briefly follow the county's secondary school catchment areas, with the exception of Bangor, which has two secondary schools. We follow the areas that Cyngor Gwynedd's research department uses, to ensure ease and to be able to analyse data.

By choosing an area, you will get the details of the parishes within the area, the contact details for the officer that we have working in the area, any specific plans we have in the area and details of the results of the Census in 2021 in terms of Welsh language skills within the area. Menter Iaith Gwynedd does not suggest that the results of the census are perfect, and specifically it does not ask for language use, which is important for us as an Initiative, but this is the only comprehensive data source for the number of Welsh speakers in Wales.

We do not suggest that people should stay within these areas by any means! Some would definitely feel that their village or parish does not belong to the 'correct' area within the areas list, but this is only a way of splitting a wide area into smaller ones to enable us to focus our efforts when analysing and implementing locally.
