Keeping the Welsh language in our Sports Clubs

Sports clubs are vital to the Welsh language here in Gwynedd and are the heartbeat of many communities across the county. People used to congregate at the chapels, but today sports clubs are one of the main places where people regularly get together to socialise in Welsh.

Whilst the Welsh language has been central to the culture of many clubs for decades, and although there are still examples of excellent practice, we are increasingly seeing and hearing that there is a general decline in the use of the language in grassroots clubs across Gwynedd, and that this is a cause for concern.

This is therefore the time to be proactive, and ensure language resilience, promoting consistent and natural use of Welsh within our sports clubs, in order to protect the language in our clubs and communities now and in the future.

Following consultation with representatives from various sports clubs from across the county, Menter Iaith Gwynedd have prepared a resource pack to address the main common challenges, from welcoming non-Welsh speaking members without having to change the language of meetings and the language of the changing room, to holding Welsh language training sessions when there is a shortage of Welsh speaking coaches. The pack shares good practice from the county’s clubs and beyond, and contains simple and practical solutions, as well as useful guides and resources.
